WHAT IS WEST COAST SWING?

West Coast Swing (WCS) is a partner dance with roots in Lindy Hop. It is characterized by a distinctive elastic look that results from its basic extension-compression technique of partner connection, and is danced primarily in a slotted area on the dance floor. The dance allows for both partners to improvise steps while dancing together, putting West Coast Swing in a short list of dances that put a premium on improvisation. WCS is danced to moderate tempo blues, R&B , funk, mellow swing and, in recent times, contemporary music. It is a highly musical dance form that can adopt many nuances from other dances. This makes WCS a highly versatile dance form. It is also seen as smoother and sexier than other dances in the swing family.

TEACHER BIO:

Gerry Morris discovered West Coast Swing (WCS) in 2005 in Australia, and quickly fell in love with the dance. Since moving to the U.S. in 2009, he has continued studying with some of the top professional swing teachers in the world.

Gerry is a popular social dancer, who also competes successfully in many swing divisions. He remains a competitive dancer on the WCS circuit.

One of the main reasons Gerry loves WCS is the wide variety of music (including many different musical genres) that are used for dancing WCS. He also loves the simple fact that anyone can learn WCS, and have a lot of fun while doing it.
